Disclaimer: This is an initial playtest for my personal hack of the Ten Candles game system. The true and tried core mechanics of the game regarding the decreasing dice pool, ten scenes with shifting narrative control, etc. remain largely in tact. The changes are primarily thematic and aim to direct the "establishing truths" phase towards the theme of loosing oneself to a chosen path.

Reasons for playing this hack rather than the original Ten Candles?

• Explore the theme of loss of self in pursuit of something greater

• Greater contribution to the worldbuilding as a player

• Explore tragic horror endings other that death, such as irreversible transformation, loss of self, dehuminisation, etc.

• Increased likelihood of getting to use the Brink mechanic by making it a flexible rather than predefined moment

Description:
The Darkest Path is a game about the characters tragic descent into obsession, transformation, the loss of identity and slow unraveling of self. Characters walk a path towards a greater goal, full of hope, ambition or desperation. However, the players know, that they will never return from this journey. There is no redmeption, only the path.

Zero-Prep: It cannot be stressed enough that both the game master and the players should go into a session without any expectations regarding their own character or the story that might be told together.

Notes and/or Warnings:

The game revolves around helplessness, fear of the unknown, and eventually the irredeemably loss of the character. Players have control over their own character arcs, including their downfall and demise, but a game of ten candles (and therefore also this hack) can be both intense and tense. We will be using the below safety tools to ensure a safe experience for all participants.

Die Charaktere folgen einem Pfad zu einem größeren Ziel, getragen von Hoffnung, Ehrgeiz oder Verzweiflung. Doch die Spielenden wissen: Sie werden von dieser Reise nie zurückkehren. Es gibt keine Erlösung – nur den Pfad.

Zero-Prep: Es kann nicht genug betont werden, dass sowohl die Spielleitung als auch die Spielenden ohne Erwartungen an ihre eigenen Charaktere oder die Geschichte, die gemeinsam erzählt wird, in eine Sitzung starten sollten.

Dieses Spiel dreht sich um Hilflosigkeit, die Angst vor dem Unbekannten und schließlich den unumkehrbaren Verlust des Charakters. Die Spielenden haben die Kontrolle über den Handlungsbogen ihrer eigenen Figur – einschließlich deren Fall und Untergang. Dennoch kann ein Spiel von Ten Candles (und somit auch dieser Hack) sowohl intensiv als auch belastend sein. Wir verwenden die Safetystools, um allen Teilnehmenden ein sicheres Spielerlebnis zu ermöglichen.
